 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Virtual

Telehealth OT has rapidly gained excellence as far as introducing seasoned therapists to innovative techniques, activities, perspective, and taking advantage of digital tools that keep children engaged in the treatment process. It further provides the therapist with insight for a better transfer of skills to your child's home environment. Parental involvement is encouraged.

THE FUTURE IS HERE

For most children, telehealth is a powerful tool for intervention.  The technology created specifically for virtual therapy in addition to new skills and activities developed under "duress" has made it very effective in eliciting change and improvement of skills.

ABILITY TO FILL IN GAPS OF SERVICE

Until now, if a child or therapist had a minor cold or was traveling there was a disruption of services and momentum that can now be avoided more often.  For children who are medically fragile, this is the perfect solution to achieve successful therapeutic outcomes.

THE ROOTS OF OT PHILOSOPHY

One of the foundations of occupational therapy is maximal independence within our natural home environment.  The ability to enter your child's home is an unexpected benefit achieved with virtual intervention.

In the Park

With the natural and man-made elements found outdoors on the Upper West Side, your child's therapist creates therapeutic experiences on sidewalks, building walls, tree roots, large boulders, and uneven paths and stairways.  These "obstacles", when approached through therapeutic eyes, create the perfect achievable challenge to promote skill improvement while incorporating your child's most loved "occupation" - PLAY.

ADVERSITY BREEDS CREATIVITY

With our sensory gym shut down due to health concerns for much longer than we could ever have anticipated, we needed to come up with a solution to continue to serve the children in our community.  The (not so) obvious solution is to use the "sensory gym"  that  Frederick Law Olmsted beautifully designed for New Yorkers back in 1857. The need for the unique perspective and intervention of occupational therapy is impactful now more than in our recent history.

ABILITY TO FILL IN GAPS OF SERVICE

Since March of 2020, we have all been thrown into the unfamiliar deep end of utilizing virtual therapy.  The learning curve has been steep but swift yet it is clear there is sometimes no substitute for the physical interaction with structures in our environment. With a less risky, open-air option that is now available even if only in a modified capacity.

THE ROOTS OF OT PHILOSOPHY

The seeds of occupational engagement were born in the late 19th century, as the moral treatment of patients in asylums began to develop. The psychiatrist Dr. Adolf Meyer found that the "use of one's hands and muscles" greatly benefitted his patients. It was from this theory that the profession of occupational therapy began. Today, we are going back to our roots and looking to occupations and meaningful engagement in activities to combat the adverse mental and physical effects of these unprecedented times.
